Menstrual Hygiene Day 2015
On the 28th of May, AFRIpads joined the rest of the world in celebrating Menstrual Hygiene Day. In 2014, the 28th of May was declared as Menstrual Hygiene Day in recognition of the woes girls and women experience during menstruation. So this was the second time we celebrated Menstrual Hygiene Day, and this year AFRIpads was the overall coordinator of all the activities that took place in Uganda.
And what a day it was! The day started with an Advocacy Walk up to Parliament, with almost 1,000 participants. There were partner organizations active on Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM), representatives from Government and many school boys and girls who all joined in the walk to raise more awareness for MHM. After the walk, the MHM Steering Committee in Uganda (of which AFRIpads is an active member) offered the MHM Charter that was developed over the past months to the Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Rebekka Kadaga. Hopefully this will have long-term policy implications for improving MHM in Uganda for girls and women!
After the activities at Parliament the festivities continued in the afternoon, with an exhibition where several organizations active on the topic of MHM could showcase their products and services. There were several performances, a play on MHM and talk shows where boys and girls could share their experiences on MHM. The day ended with a fabulous performance by AFRIpads’ own product designer Sandra Suubi!! Sandra won the Airtel Trace Star Competition in Uganda, and as a strong MHM supporter herself nobody could have closed the day better.
All in all it was a great day. It is very important that we keep raising awareness for this issue, to make sure that the sanitation conditions for girls and women and their access to the proper materials so they can hygienically manage their period will improve all over the world!
